  • Research of the brain found that older subjects with alcoholism exhibited more brain tissue loss than younger subjects with alcoholism, often despite similar total lifetime alcohol consumption. These results suggest that aging may render a person more susceptible to alcohol's effects.
  • Many reputable studies indicate that individuals with an alcoholism problem that abstain from alcohol completely do get better in their cognitive function and memory; brain scans have indicated that in many instances, their brains can begin to return to normal over time.
  • Physical changes that are commonly associated with the aging process can make older people feel "high" even after drinking small amounts of alcohol. So even if there is no medical reason to avoid alcohol, older men and women should consider limiting themselves to one to two drinks per day.
  • Very large amounts of alcohol (such as a quart if drunk in five to thirty minutes) may occasionally cause death by anesthetizing the brain center that controls breathing.
