  • Underage drinking can lead to other problems. These may include bad grades in school, run-ins with the law, and drug use.
  • Many times, family members and friends may feel obligated to cover for the person with the drinking problem; in many of these instances, they may take on the burden of cleaning up their messes or begin to lie and make excuses for the alcoholic; pretending that nothing is wrong and constantly hiding away all of their fears and resentments can take an enormous emotional toll on loved ones.
  • Many prescription drugs carry the label "Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication;" the reason that this warning should be heeded is because the use of alcohol can increase the effects of drugs that make people drowsy, can alter the metabolism (break-down) of drugs, or reduce the effectiveness of drugs.
  • Binge drinking is a common pattern of excessive alcohol use in the United States. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a persons blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08 grams percent or above. This typically happens when men consume 5 or more drinks, and when women consume 4 or more drinks, in about 2 hours.
